To the Editor. Sir—l see in the council’s discussions that the City Engineer recommends that repairs to footpaths be made with gravel or metal chippings. To my mind small gravel may be better of the two suggestions; for if the metal chippings means material like that which was put on York street, off Tramway road, it was horrible to walk on, and those who walked that street dodged it. Some of the pieces of metal j}in long were as sharp as a razor. We want no more of that stuff. -Fine not rough gravel is far better, until such time as the council can afford to make new paths. Concrete paths, if properly made are the best and last longest. I agree with Councillor Webb in recommending the contract system where possible. It is better for the workers,, as well as employers—that is genuine workers—and, as stated, is cheaper for all. The contract system was in vogue GO years ago in England.
