CHARGE FOR BOARD.
To the Editor. Sir,—With your permission I would draw attention tq, what I consider a miscarriage of justice to workmen having occasion to be out in the country periodically. It has come to my notice that profiteering is carried On by some dairy factory managers. I made inquiry about the rate charged for board to assistants. I was told that it was 22/6 a week last season. Now, in some cases the manager got milk, butter, cheese and firing free. In town there are plenty of houses available at £1 and even less. They have everything to buy and rent to pay on top of this. In conversation with a factory hand the other day, I asked how he fared. “Oh,” he said, “we bach.” Now, every factory has not the accommodation for baching. He said the managers had a good thing on. I said 17/6 a week would be ample for board. He replied 15/- would be plenty. If directors and suppliers are so generous they might see that some of their generosity was passed on to the assistants—l am, etc., JUSTICE.
