IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Footballers and Rules. How many footballers have read the rules of the game? Mr T. Meredith suggested at last evening’s meeting of the Rugby Union executive that not 10 per cent, of the players had actually read the rules. They depended for their knowledge on hearsay and experience. Members agreed that 10 per cent, was a generous estimate. * * * * Missing Youth.

William Donald Anderson, aged 16, who resided with his father in Metzger street, left home between midnight and 6.15 a.m. yesterday on a bicycle and at a late hour last evening his whereabouts was unknown. The description of the missing youth is as follows: About sft 7in or Bin in height, very robust, dark hair and complexion, brown eyes. He was wearing a pair of khaki trousers and a light grey coat and a pairy of heavy army boots. It is believed that the youth has gone out of town.

Shield Wen Again. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board’s shield, which is awarded annually to the district gaining most points for the best group of fat lambs and which was won this year by Southland, has now reached Invercargill again and for the next year it will remain in the Southland A. and P. Association’s office. The shield was first awarded in 1932, when it was won by Southland, which has now the honour of having its name inscribed twice on the trophy. Each year the lambs are judged alive in New Zealand, and then killed and sent to Smithfield, where the carcasses are judged.
