Plunket Society

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Invercargill branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Southland League Rooms on Wednesday, July 19. ITiose present were: Mrs H. W. Roy ds (president), Mesdames Ritchie Crawford, J. D. Mitchell, S. M. Macalister, A. E. Bath, W. Hinchey, P. A. Price, C. C. Jennings, W. S. Todd, A. Derbie, T. Bailey, Roy Anderson and R. M. Strang. Owing to her absence from Invercargill Mrs A. S. Russell was granted leave of absence for two months. It was resolved to hold the annual meeting of the branch in the Southland Women’s Club Rooms on Wednesday, August 9, at 8 p.m. _ It was announced that the competition for the Dolls’ Pram was won by Mrs David Pottinger, Don street. Mrs Royds commented on the success of the Reveille held recently in aid of the society. She was pleased to announce that the funds gained considerable benefit as a result, and the committee wish to thank Mr W. Lints, the producer, and all those who worked so willingly. A report from Mr J. Stewart, gardener at the Karitane-Hunt Hospital, was received. Good work has been done by him and quite a considerable amount of firewood has been obtained from trees on the property. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Brookes, at Tuatapere, expressing the deepest sympathy of the committee with him in the sad loss of his wife. Mrs Brookes had always been a staunch friend of the society, first at Bluff and later at Tuatapere, where she held the position of secretary for a number of years. The following were appointed a visiting committee for the month:—Karitane-Hunt Hospital: Mesdames Royds, Strang, Macalister, Jennings, Bath and Anderson; Anderson Home: Mrs Crawford; Rest Room: Mrs Todd; South Invercargill: Mrs Derbie; Gladstone: Mrs Mitchell. The following are the nurses’ reports:—

Karitane-Hunt Hospital. Matron Wameke, writing from the Karitane-Hunt Home, reported that 4 mothers and 6 babies had been admitted for treatment during June, and 1 mother and 1 baby discharged, leaving a total of 3 mothers and 9 babies in on June 30. Three mothers and 9 babies had been the largest number in on any one day, and Edendale, Makarewa, Gore, Otautau and Invercargill had been the sources of admission. Miss Barbara Sale had commenced duty on the nursing staff on June 8, and Miss Ethel Double had completed her training. Donations were acknowledged from Mesdames Crawford (honey), R. A. Anderson, Turnbull and Mr Dodds (apples), Mesdames Hinchey and H. Kelly (blankets), A. S. Russell (books), Kelly (children’s clothes) and Mr Meadows (plants). Anderson Plunket Home.

Nurse Maclntyre reported that there had been 41 new cases for June at the Anderson Plunket Home. Twentyseven new cases and 330 old cases had been visited at their homes, while 570 adults, 528 babies and 97 older children had been to the office, making a total of 1002 babies and 240 older children under supervision. Three letters had been received and four written. Whooping cough was still prevalent, and there were several cases of mumps. Sub-Branches.

Nurse Wilson reported that during

her four visits to Riverton, she had called at 16 homes, while 61 adults and 59 babies had come to the rooms, with 1 new case. Bluff. (4 visits)—3s homes, 56 adults and 48 babies visiting rooms, 3 new cases; Tuatapere (4 visits) —15 homes, 24 adults and 20 babies visiting rooms, 5 new cases; Otautau (3 visits) —6 homes, 28 adults and 24 babies visiting rooms, 3 new cases; Orepuki (3 visits) —6 homes, 41 adults and 35 babies visiting rooms, 1 new case; Ohai (2 visits)—s homes, 18 adults and 15 babies visiting rooms, 1 new case Nurse Rhind reported that during her four visits to Waikiwi the general health of babies had been good. She had visited 16 homes, while 49 adults, 45 babies and 13 older children had visited the rooms.

Nurse Maclntyre reported that 114 adults, 110 babies and 19 older children had visited the rooms at South Invercargill, with 2 new cases, and she had called at 173 homes. At the Rest Rooms there had been 127 adults, 120 babies and 17 older children, with 2 new cases.
