GORE SALEYARDS

ANNUAL MEETING OF COMPANY. At the annual meeting of the Gore Saleyards Company on Saturday there were present Messrs Hugh Smith (chairman), J. Cumming, Henry Smith, W. C. Ladbrook, H. E. Bacon, H. P. Mclntyre, J. Craigie and F. Trapski. i The annual report stated: Sales during the year were practically on a par with those of the preceding 12 months. Expenditure was kept well down, however, and the operations for the term showed a loss of £8 8/8 as compared with £37 11/1 last year. During the year the directors found it necessary to appoint a collector in an endeavour to bring in some of the arrears in calls. Sufficient cash was raised by this method to keep the company from having to pay interest to the bank on an overdraft. The amount of calls left outstanding, £172 4/-, is ..still large, and it is hoped that this amount will be voluntarily reduced during the coming year. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said it was satisfactory to see that the loss was not very great this year. They had a few good sales at the commencement of the year, and they hoped now that things were on the upgrade. With regard to the revenue, which was light, they were not in a bad way. The yards were in good condition and were a great asset to the district. He hoped they would have a larger number of buyers in the future. Their canvassing drive last year had been fairly successful, but still another £lOO should be collected.

Mr J. Cumming seconded the motion, which was carried. The chairman urged that an effort should be made to hold a fat lamb sale and induce buyers to come along. If they had a sale of, say, 3000 fats they would encourage buyers to come. They should keep the matter in view when the freezing works were opened again. This was all the business, and at a meeting of directors held subsequently it was decided that Mr Hugh Smith be re-elected chairman of directors.
