HOKONUI NOTES

An enjoyable evening was spent in the Hokonui Hall on Friday, when Mr and Mrs MacMillan and family and Mrs Martin were tendered a social evening. Mr MacMillan who has received the appointment of manager of the Tisbury dairy factory, made himself a general favourite with the suppliers to the Hokonui factory and also to all. those who came in contact with him in the district. The evening was spent in dancing. Messrs R. Anglem and R. Mcßae contributed songs. Mr D. McRae, chairman of the Hokonui factory directors, referred to the good work of Mr MacMillan as a cheesemaker, and though they were sorry to lose him, still they were pleased to know he had been appointed manager of the Tisbury factory. He also referred to the way in which the factory and grounds were kept. He had recently seen two factories and grounds which used to win prizes for the best kept gardens, and he now thought Hokonui could hold its own with any of them. He wished Mr and Mrs MacMillan and family and Mrs Martin the best of luck in their new home.

Mr John Galt also referred to the popularity of the guests of the evening, and as chairman of the Library Committee he wished to thank Mr MacMillan for the good work he had done in connection with the new library. Mrs G. C. Paterson presented Mrs MacMillan with a vase from the teachers and children of the Sunday School in which she took a very active part. Mr MacMillan, in thanking the people of the district, said he had spent a very pleasant time in Hokonui and was sorry to leave it. He could assure them that they would not forget their many kind friends. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Young and Messrs J. Mac Master, D. Brown and W. Irwin, while Mr J. Davidson was M.C.

General.

Over 30 years ago a fine library was formed and housed in the Hokonui School, but for want of support it lapsed for many years. Under the direction of a strong committee with Mr John Galt as chairman and Mr D. Macßae as secretary, a new library has been formed and will be opened this (Tuesday) evening. The new library is housed in the hall. The fortnightly euchre parties have been very successful so far. A large number of people attend, over 80 being present one evening. The hall funds, for which the parties are run, will greatly benefit.
