TELEPHONE CHARGES

THE RATE IN NEW ZEALAND. LOWEST IN THE WORLD. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 13. New Zealand has the lowest telephone charges in the world, Mr G. MacNamara, Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, reminded the New Zealand Farmers’ Union conference in a letter last night. Not only were the charges cheaper in New Zealand but the Dominion was the third country in the world for density of telephones, being only exceeded by Canada and the United States. By Act of Parliament the Post and Telegraph Department was compelled to pay its profits into the Consolidated Fund and last year had handed over £20,000. To make a reduction in the telephone charges of 15 per cent, would mean a loss of £274,000. The department lost on all the rural telephones erected but the loss was made up in the cities.
