WOMEN’S DIVISION
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Girl Guide rooms on Friday afternoon when Mrs P. Arnott presided over a large attendance of members. Miss Fairweather was appointed to take charge of the distribution of the N.Z. Countrywoman, and it was decided to ask members to bring along helpful suggestions for making the publication a success. Mrs Arnott spoke of the success of the Home Science demonstration given in the Technical School, and it was resolved to send a letter of thanks and a donation of 10/- to Mr Stewart for the use of the Home Science kitchen. An invitation was received from the Wright’s Bush branch of the W.D.F.U. to be present at their first birthday party to be held on Wednesday, June 28, at 8 p.m. A letter was received from the Elstown branch of the W.D.F.U. asking for information regarding the markets and helpful ideas and suggestions for the successful running of the branch. Mrs G. McDonald was appointed to correspond with the branch, and it was decided to present them with an Invercargill branch cookery book. Miss McKenzie gave a report of the annual executive meeting, items of particular interest being the Gardening Calendar which is to be issued shortly, and the correspondence from the A. and P. Association appealing for assistance in the home industries section of the Winter Show. The schedule for the forthcoming wool exhibition wase read and discussed and a committee consisting of Mesdames W. McDowell, C. E. Williams and C. McKenzie was appointed to work up enthusiasm in the Invercargill branch and obtain exhibits. Donations of £5 to the general fund of the executive, and £5 to delegates expenses were made, and the president, Mrs P. Arnott, was appointed to represent the branch at the Dominion Conference in Wellington in July. It was decided to have a roll call at next meeting, the subject to be “What I like doing most, and what I like doing least in housework.” Dr McCaw will also lecture on Cancer” at the meeting to be held on July 28. After the meeting Mrs C. McKenzie gave a very instructive demonstration on basket making, and exhibited some beautiful samples of her work for which she was accorded a very heartyvote of thanks.
Mr Surrott, of Asheville, North Carolina, learned to read at the age of 80. Since then he has read the Bible through 25 times. He is now 89.
