THE PUBLIC SERVICE
STAFF AT WESTERN SAMOA.
INSPECTION BY COMMISSIONER.

Wellington, June 19.
To make a departmental inspection of the staff of the Public Service on the mandated territory of Western Samoa at Niue, the Public Service Commissioner, Mr P. Verschaffelt, and the Secretary of External Affairs, Mr Berendsen, leave Wellington by the Maui Pomare on Wednesday. They will be absent from the Dominion for about seven weeks and are due back on August 8. During Mr Berendsen’s absence, Mr A. B. Ross, of the External Affairs Department, acts as Secretary of External Affairs, and Mr A. D. Thomson acts as Commissioner for Mr Verschaffelt. Mr Thomson was Assistant-Public Service Commissioner from 1913 till 1920, retiring from the Public Service in the latter year. At one time Mr Thomson was a member of Magistracv. He was Stipendiary Magistrate' at Palmerston North from 1903 till 1912. .Previous to his appointment to the bench he was in the Justice Department.
