FAIRFAX NOTES

DANCE. (From Our Correspondent.) The first of the fortnightly dances was held in the hall on 29th ult., when, despite the inclemency of the weather, a fair attendance spent a very enjoyable evening. Good music was supplied by Miss Helm and Messrs Fraser and Coombes, extras being played by Mr J. V. O’Brien. An extended evening next night should draw a large gathering. Euchre. The usual card evening was attended by 29 players, a new heater installed i the hall making it more comfortable for patrons. Miss Crawford won the ladies’ prize, Mrs Rankin being runnerup, while Mr A. J. Officer annexed the men’s trophy. Three others were equal for the second prize, and in the playoff Mr G. Crawford was successful. At Gropers on Thursday evening there was again a good attendance at the library, when the final game of euchre for the first half of the season was played. Miss Sheridan and Mr W. Foster were the principal winners, Mrs Foster and Mr F. Sheridan gaining second honours. The aggregate prizes were awarded to Mrs Rankin and Mr J. Agnew. Welcome Home. The customary house-warming was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Mamane on their arrival home from their honeymoon, when neighbours and friends from far and near spent a very pleasant time. The toast of “The Newly-mar-ried Couple” was proposed by Mr T. Helm, who congratulated the bridegroom on the step he had taken and welcomed his bride to the district, wishing them every success. All then joined in singing “For they are jolly good fellows.” Cards, songs and stories were then indulged in, and at midnight the gathering broke up with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Presentation. To do honour to Miss Reidie, who is shortly to be married, the ladies and friends of the Fairfax branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union met at the schoolhouse on Monday afternoon. The president, Mrs Mitchell, very ably made a neat little speech, after which she presented Miss Reidie with a supper set, and wished her every success in the future. Mrs Devanney then spoke of the guest’s qualifications and capabilities, her remarks being endorsed by Mrs Fleck and Miss Herbison. Miss Redie thank-

ed all for the present and the speakers for their kind remarks. “For she’s a jolly good fellow” was heartily sung by the company. The afternoon passed pleasantly and quickly, songs being rendered by Mrs Devanney, Mrs and MisS Parker, and songs and recitations by Miss Jean Playfair. Personal. Miss Robertson is at present spending a holiday as the guest of the Misses Hardie. Miss Helm is visiting Mrs F. Hilliard, George street, Invercargill.
