ON THE IMPROVE

CONDITIONS AT HOME TRADE COMMISSIONER’S OBSERVATIONS THE TARIFF REVIEW (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 12. Trade is definitely looking up at Home, said Mr L. A. Paish, Trade Commissioner for New Zealand, who returned to-day after a year’s absence from the Dominion. When he left Home the unemployment figures were falling. Things were bound to hang fire till after the international conference, but as soon as that was over one could definitely hope for a period of recovery both for manufacturing and primary producing countries. With regard to the tariff review in New Zealand, he was sure the recommendations would be in accordance with the letter and spirit of the Ottawa Conference. Though that conference did not do everything anybody wanted, it did make a start and it certainly had impressed him as being a very hopeful foundation for future good relations between New Zealand and the Motherland. People at Home did not like the exchange rate being altered and have not understood the effect of the alteration, but he did not think the alteration would have any prejudicial effect on New Zealand credit.
