WRESTLING

A WILLING BOUT. CROWD RESENT DISPLAY. (Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, June 12. A thousand people noisily protested against the exhibition of “Whiskers” Blake and Jack Patterson in an eightround professional wrestling bout on Saturday night. The bout was willing in places and the contestants displayed anger at times. The referee, Mr A. Craig, declared the bout a draw, each man having one fall. Blake was more scientific and slammed his opponent violently several times. Patterson was much more powerful and thus got himself out of trouble. At the end of the bout he was hissed and hooted by a section of the crowd which resented the poor display and supported Blake, who held that only seven rounds had been staged. Patterson returned from the dressing room and offered to wrestle the deciding round, but was dissuaded. Chaos ruled, the patrons leaving the theatre and returning in a body twice. WALKER BEATS CLARK. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland. June 12. George Walker and Jack Clark met to-night in a return wrestling match. Walker won by two falls to one. Clark secured the first fall in the second round, pinning his opponent after lifting him and slamming him hard to the mat. Walker evened in the third round with a fall gained by a reverse wristlock and head scissors. The contest ended in the fourth round, Walker obtaining an easy fall after making his opponent groggy with a series of side headlock throws. Clark was labouring under a severe handicap. He had been treated by doctors this afternoon for blood poisoning in the main finger of his left hand, an urgent operation being imperative. Clark entered the ring with the finger heavily bandaged and deadened against pain. His hand was swollen and he could make little use of it. VARGA BEATS PEREIRA. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 12. A flying tackle that missed spelt defeat for the Portuguese wrestler Al Pereira (15st 101 b) when he met Count Joseph Varga, of Hungary (15st) before a full house in the Town Hall this evening.

Early in the sixth round Pereira charged with head down and Varga stepped aside like a toreador. Pereira passed between the two top ropes at s corner, hardly making the strands quiver and landed head first on the floor among the front row seats. He was unable to enter the ring within the stipulated time and Varga was declared the winner.

Varga had a fall to his credit in the third round and Pereira had evened in the fifth with a press.
