N.Z. MANUFACTURERS
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. TARIFF PROBLEMS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, May 11. The New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federations Executive discussed the action of the Unemployment Board in inviting tenders for the supply of boots and clothing, but the decision arrived at was not disclosed. Plans were finalized for presentation of the manufacturers’ case before the Tariff Commission.
The executive accepted an invitation from the Importers’ Federation to a joint conference to discuss tariff and other matters. Representatives from the four centres reported that progress was being made in bringing together firms engaged, in the same branch of industry and the degree of co-ordination which had been achieved was unprecedented. It was agreed that manufacturers facing the tariff inquiry were confident that in the majority of cases the present measure of protection granted them can be fully justified on the principles embodied in the Ottawa Agreement and from other points of view.
