THE WINTER SHOW
CONCLUDING DAY. MANY INTERESTED SPECTATORS. The Southland A. and P. Association’s Winter Show came to a conclusion yesterday, when many interested spectators took advantage of the final opportunity to view the exhibits during the afternoon and evening. The weather although not of the best, did not prevent a good attendance, and the Drill Hall presented an animated appearance. Speaking to a Southland Times reporter, the secretary of the association (Mr A. L. Adamson) said they were pleased to acknowledge the services of the honorary stewards. These officials attended to their duties very conscientiously in assisting in staging the exhibits as they came into the hall, while later they gave valuable help to the judges. “Everything worked very smoothly,” he added, “and the credit for this must be given to all the honorary assistants.” In the grading class of the cheese and butter section, large white cheeses were staged by the factory managers who were required to grade the whole class and enter grade points on a score card provided by the association. First place was secured by the manager of the Gorge Road factory (Mr Foster), with Mr W. Gaitt (Fairfax) second. The prizes for quality in this class were awarded as follows: Fairfax 1, Mabel 2, Gorge Road 3. The Government dairy produce graders held an inspection of the cheese with the dairy factory managers and gave a demonstration as to quality. An impromptu grading competition was then held by the managers and resulted in D. McQueen (Kennington) and R. Stevens (Waikawa Valley) being placed first equal, with D. McDonald (Mataura) second.
Perhaps the greatest centre of attraction for the public in the evening was the screening of scenic films by Mr J. A. Malcolm, of the local Government Tourist Bureau. His films were varied and interesting, depicting all the main beauty spots of New Zealand, such as Milford Sound and track, Mount Cook, the thermal regions and all other tourist attractions of note, which were shown to the best advantage. It was a feature greatly appreciated by visitors.
