WATERS SUBSIDING

EASTERN DISTRICT FLOODS. ORETI RIVER SWOLLEN. Although rain still fell at intervals yesterday, the fall was only a small one and all the flood waters in the Eastern District were subsiding fairly steadily last evening. Approximately 15 inches of water lay across the main road at McNab yesterday morning, but this did not present any difficulties to motorists if they exercised care. Considerable quantities of surface water were lying about in all parts yesterday, but the rivers were beginning to fall and in a few days should be back to normal unless warmer weather causes a thaw in the heavy snow in the high country. The Gore Post Office issued the following river repoi-t at 2.45 p.m. yesterday :— Gore.—South-west breeze, gloomy and showery; river now 3ft Ilin above usual level. Waikaia.—Weather unsettled; river Ilin above normal. Glenaray.—Slight fall in river. Garston.—Weather very unsettled; river normal. Waikaka.—River is falling and now about 2ft above normal. It was reported yesterday that the Oreti was in flood at Taramoa, where traffic was held up. The Mataura River rose over its banks near Fortrose so that traffic was also obstructed there during part of the day. The mail contractor could not get over the bridge at the lower Mataura yesterday morning, requiring to come back and cross over via Pine Bush. He had to wait an hour for the waters to recede.
