KEEN ANGLERS
VISITORS FROM ENGLAND. Auckland, December 21. Among the passengers by the Rangitata were a number of English sportsmen who have come out for the fishing season. A prominent figure in deep-sea sport is Mr White Wickham, who has missed only three seasons since his first visit in 1921. Sir Philip Lee Brocklehurst, who is accompanied by Lady Brocklehurst, is also keen to try his hand among the big fish. Sir Philip, who has visited the Dominion before, was a member of the British Antarctic Expedition in the Nimrod under Shackleton in 1897. An enthusiastic angler making' another trip is Mr A. Matheson, whose hobby is fly-fishing. He has taken many trout from New Zealand streams and is a noted angler in England. Captain J. Haggas, a retired officer of the 15th Hussars, has come out for the shooting and fishing, and is intent on deer stalking in the South Island. Lieut.-Conunander C. Branson, who formerly served with the New Zealand Naval Squadron as gunnery officer on the Diomede and retired from the service in 1929, is making a holiday trip to the Dominion. He has planned to spend some time trout fishing in the Taupo district. Major Kerr Smiley is making his second visit to New Zealand. On his holiday last year he purchased the two-year-old Persian, which later went into J. T. Jamieson’s stable in Sydney and has raced with success this season. Major Kerr Smiley was for 13 years a . member of the House of Commons. A fishing holiday is the main purpose of his visit.
