WOMAN LOSES HANDBAG. After a woman who had give evidence had gone back to her seat in Westminster County Court the other day she returned in a state of agitation and announced to the judge that while she was in the witness box someone had taken her bag, containing £6, from the seat. Judge Turner: Who was sitting near her? A man who sat on the same bench as the woman rose and said: “There was

a middle-aged man with a very red face sitting beside her, who has gone.” A youth and a woman who were on the seat near the owner of the bag then came forward and offered to be searched. They accompanied the court usher to another room, and he reported that they had been searched and had not got the bag. Later a police officer informed the judge that he had made inquiries and taken names. Judge Turner: Well, that is all we can possibly do. This is a nice new game I shall have a notice put up; “Carry your handbags.”
