OTAUTAU NOTES

PRESBYTERIAN SUNDAY SCHOOL. (From' Our Correspondent.) The break-up of the Presbyterian Sunday School for the year took place in the Sunday School Hall on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance of parents and pupils. Tire Rev. W. H. Howes presided. A splendid programme was submitted as follows: Several items by the junior choir under the leadership of Mr E. Jellyman; duet, Misses Connie and Margaret Jellyman; solo, Master Lex Liddell; solo and chorus, Miss Connie Jelly man; song, Miss Jean Campbell; songs, Misses V. Bird, Betty Baker and Mr E. Liddell (encored); sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Allison Angus. The accompaniments were played by Miss Bird and Mr E. Jellyman. At the conclusion of the programme the Rev. Howes paid a tribute to Mr Jellyman whom, he understood, had been responsible for the training of the children, and they had acquitted themselves well. Mr Gould, one of the superintendents, also took the opportunity to express his pleasure at the large attendance, and thanked the parents for sending their children so regularly, this being very encouraging to the teachers. He also thanked the teachers for their acts of self-denial and assistance during the year, and wished all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The chairman then presented the prizes as follows: Infants (Miss Shaw’s Class): Joan Chancellor and Allan Brown (special prizes donated by the teacher for lessons). Attendance prizes: Anabel Mackie, Eunice Jellyman, Jenny Lee, Beth Gould, Shirley Ferguson, Sally Chisholm, Joy Hibbs, Edna Thomas, Dorothy Hibbs, Morven Low, Margaret Dickson, Mary Dickson, Fay Lindsay, Nancy Gutschlag, and Margaret Fisher. J. Mackie and M. E. Browning. St. Andrew’s Sunday School. The annual break-up of St Andrew’s Sunday School this year took the form of a “Christmas Tree.” The vicar (Rev. N. Thompson) and Sunday School teachers (Mrs Batchelor and Miss Wilson), with the help of the lady members, provided tea at the church on Saturday, and afterwards the children were treated to ice-cream by the vicar and afterwards taken to the pictures. The serving of tea was done in two sittings, and a large Christmas cake was the centre-piece of the table, the wording on it being “Christmas greetings to St. Andrew’s forthcoming warriors.” After the vicar had delivered an appropriate address to the children Mrs Thompson cut the _ cake, and all present were given a slice. The Rev. Thompson conveyed good wishes to the children and took the' opportunity to thank the ladies of the parish for their

help ■ in providing the treat, and particularly the Sunday School teachers for their splendid work in the interests of the pupils and the church. He also thanked the children for their freewill offerings towards the appeal for funds to provide Christmas dinner for children at the orphanages. Rangers. An interesting ceremony took place in the Guide room on Monday evening when the recently formed company of Rangers was enrolled by Commissioner Mrs Reekie, who outlined the objects of the movement. Members of the Guide Committee and Rover Crew were also in attendance. The following were enrolled: Acting-captain, D. I. Mills; acting-lieutenant, M. Chilton; rangers, G. Renowden, C. Hope, M. Brown, E. Wesney, M. Chisholm, E. Bone, M. Rowe, M. Daly, M. Porteous, J. Duncan, L. Collie, M. Summers, I. Smell ie, and R. Salton. Supper was provided by the Guide Committee, and the gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Farmers’ Union. There was an attendance of 20 members at the monthly meeting of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union in the supper room on Saturday evening, over which Mr J. D. Clouston (president) presided. Before proceeding with the business the chairman moved a resolution of sympathy with Miss Wilson in the loss of her father, and Mr Booth and family in the loss of Mrs Booth, the secretary being instructed. to forward letters of condolence. The motion was carried in the usual manner The chairman gave an interesting resume of the business transacted at the last meeting of the Southland executive. A general discussion followed on the question of exchange and the buying of British goods. The president reported that the freezing works were opening on January 4, a lower schedule of prices having been fixed, which was being passed on to farmers. The question of an offer to supply binder twine was considered, and the chairman and secretary were empowered to place a bulk order. The chairman extended the season’s greetings to members, and trusted they would experience a more prosperous year in 1933. Personal. Mrs James and Miss James are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Smyth. Mrs Scott, Allenby, has returned from a holiday spent in Christchurch. Mrs Ham was the guest of Mrs McDonald recently. Mrs J. H. Thomas and Miss K. Harrington were visiting Mr and Mrs A. P. Harrington during the week-end. Miss Molly Saxelby is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs R. Seatter and family, Timaru, are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Seatter, Chester street, for the holidays. Mr and Mrs F. L. Smith left on Tuesday on a motor tour of the South Island. Mr and Mrs N. Brooker, Clinton, were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. T. Brooker during the week. Mrs J. Taylor who has been staying with Mrs Gordon returned to Dimedin last week. Mr and Mrs A. I. Milne and family are spending the holidays at Pembroke. Mrs J. E. Stevens, Clyde, is the guest of Mi - and Mrs G. H. Stevens. Miss White, Ashburton, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. C. White. Miss Gellatly spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs W. Richardson, Aparima. Miss McMurray, Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. A. Liddell. Miss McConachie is Spending the vacation at Lochiel. Miss I. Wilson is spending a holiday with her people at Clyde. Mrs May and Mr W. May, Clyde rale, were renewing acquaintances in the township last week. Miss Harris, Aparima, is spending a holiday with friends in Christchurch. Misses Shaw and Donnan left on Monday to spend the holidays at the Franz Josef glacier. Miss Whittlestone is visiting friends at Timaru. Mrs Morgan is the guest of Mr and Mrs H. A. Bone.
