RELIGION IN SCHOOLS

REFERENDUM SUGGESTED. (Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, November 24. The South Canterbury Methodist Synod passed the following resolution: “Owing to the repeated failures of the Legislature to deal satisfactorily with the question of religious teaching in the primary schools we are of the opinion that the question should be referred to the people by means of a referendum and that a petition should be presented to the Government urging that this be' done. The synod demands that the censorship on talking films be tightened in the direction of eliminating the worst type of poster as well as films.” It was resolved that the conference be urged to press for an increase in the excise duties and in the cost of large publichouse licenses.
