LUMSDEN NOTES

WEATHER SUMMARY. (From Our Correspondent.) During the month of September rain fell on seven days, the highest fall being 54 points on the second, and the lowest one point on the 29th. The total rainfall was 1.95 inches. Frost of a minor degree occurred on six nights. The weather on the whole was mild and springlike especially in the latter half and when there were several very warm days. The prevailing winds were easterly by south-east following misty mornings. Up to the present there has been an absence of equinoctial gales. Angling. On the whole the local anglers met with success on the opening day of the fishing season. Several of those who fished in the river handy to the township report having gained limit bags, although the fish were not as large as those caught further away from home. Snow coming from the high country has caused a light fresh in the river which will put it into good condition for next week-end. Tennis. The official opening of the tennis season was held on Saturday, October 1, in ideal weather. It was very encouraging to see the number of new players who were on the courts, this auguring well for a successful season. A Yankee tournament was conducted, the. winners being Mrs B. Sims and Mr D. Ogilvy. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr Ogilvy declared the courts

open and wished the players every success in the coming season. Euchre. On Tuesday evening the members of the Anglican Church committee held the final of the euchre tournament, which had been run throughout the winter months. The Rev. Wilson thanked all those who had attended regularly and all who had assisted so willingly during the tournament. He then presented the prizes for the aggregate which were won by Mrs A. McDonald with 299 points and Mr A. McDowell with 220 points. The winners on Tuesday evening were Mrs L. Keith and Rev. Wilson. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Campbell and Mr G. Aitcheson. Dates Of Sports Meetings. At the meeting of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union held in Lumsden last Saturday the following dates were allotted for the sports meetings:— Edendale.—December 26.
