Knitting Needles

A Rolled Beret.

Having had a number of inquiries from readers, directions are given this week for knitting the popular beret with the plaited wool around the edge. Materials required are 11 skeins of 4 ply wool and 1 skein of a contrasting shade for the plait. No. 8 needles. Begin at the lower edge and cast on 120 stitches. Knit in plain knitting or else in stocking stitch for 51 inches. Then shape the top by knitting every 10th and 11th stitches together all along the row. Knit 3 plain rows. Knit every 9th and 10th stitch together all along the row. Knit 3 plain rows. Knit every Bth and 9th stitch together all along the row. Knit 3 plain rows. Knit every 7th and Sth stitch together all along the row. Knit 3 plain rows. Keep on decreasing in this fashion all along every 4th row until you are knitting 2 together and there are only about 15 stitches left. Break the wool leaving a fairly long thread, using a darning needle, and the wool attached to the cap, take off the stitches from the knitting needle on to the wool, pull up tightly and finish firmly. Sew up the seam at the back. Make a thick plait long enough to go round the cap, and stitch on.
