At the request of a reader, directions are given this week for making a man’s jumper in the Cable pattern.

Materials Required:—l4oz of 4-ply wool. No. 9 needles. No. 12 needles. Measurement: —38-inch chest.

Begin at the lower edge of the back and cast on 143 stitches on No. 12 needles. Knit in ribbing 2 plain, 2 purl for 4- inches. Change to No. 9 needles, and work in pattern until the work measures 17 inches from the beginning. Pattern.—lst Row: * Knit 6, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, and repeat from * to end of row.

2nd Row: * Purl 6, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, and repeat from * to end of row. Repeat the last two rows three times. On the 7th Row you turn the cable like this:

Starting on the right side of the work, * slip the first 3 stitches on to a spare needle, knit the next 3 stitches, put the 3 stitches from the spare needle back on to the other needle again, and knit them, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, and repeat from * to end of row. Repeat the last 7 rows throughout the jumper. When the work measures 17 inches shape the armholes by casting off 11 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Knit on in pattern until the armholes measure 10 inches from the beginning. Shape the shoulders by casting off 6 stitches at the beginning of every row until there are 44 stitches left in the centre at the back of the neck. Cast off. The Front: Cast on 143 stitches and knit in the same fashion as the back to within 1| inches of the armholes. Divide up the stitches for the V neck and decrease 1 stitch at neck edge in every 4th row until the shoulder is the same measurement as the back should-

Armholes: Shape same as the back 1J inches above neck opening. Knit until armholes measure 10 inches. Shape shoulders by casting off 6 stitches on the armhole edge in every other row until all stitches are cast off. Make the other side of the neck and shoulder to match. Sleeve: Cast on 66 stitches at wrist and knit in ribbing for 4 inches. Change to No. 9 needles and increase at once to 110 stitches in the next row. Knit in pattern until the sleeve is long enough at the under-arm seam. Knit 2 tog. at each end of your needle in every row until 33 remain. Cast off.

For the Neck: With four No. 12 steel needles pick up the stitches down either side of the V neck and at the back. Knit in ribbing 1 plain 1 purl all round, always knitting 2 tog., on each needle at the base of the V neck for 2 inches. Cast off.
