WOMEN’S DIVISION

INVERCARGILL BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday, when Mrs King presided over an attendance of 70 members, and ex-

tended a welcome to four new members.

Mrs Lokan reported that the new cookery book vzould be ready for sale about the middle of October, and branches undertaking the sale of it would receive a commission for doing so.

Mrs G. McDonald and Miss McKenzie visited the W.D.F.U. members in the hospitals during the month, and reported that the patients greatly appreciated the efforts made, and the interest shown in their welfare. The Farmers’ Union is issuing a “Helpful Hints for Farmers,” book, and Mrs Ward appealed to members to support it and spoke of the prizes offered for the best collection of hints. Mrs Niederer reported that the executive had decided to have a tent at the Southland A. and P. Show and asked for the co-operation of the Invercargill branch in running it. It was decided to leave all arrangements for it in the hands of Mrs,Ward, Mrs King and the secretaries. A suggestion was made that the W.D.F.U. have an exhibition of handcraft in a prominent window in town during show week. The date of the birthday party of the branch was fixed for" November 25 and it was left in the hands of the president to make suitable arrangements. As it will be the executive meeting day also, Miss McKenzie was instructed to send invitations to all the branches to be present. Mrs Boyd suggested that a competition be held for the best article costing not more than 1/6.

Mrs Lokan reported that Tuis Annuals would be obtainable from her at an early date, also that last year she had received a prize of £3 3/- for the number she had sold. This amount she handed over to the treasurer of the branch as a donation to the cookery book fund. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Lokan. Mrs King and Mrs Ward appealed to members to support the market as it was there solely for members’ benefit.

After the business meeting, Mrs Smith addressed the gathering on the use of laminated wool, Mrs Lokan demonstrated the dyeing and curing of sheepskins, and Mrs Randle spoke on sweet pea growing and the preparation of seed boxes for the growing of annuals. They were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
