WOODLANDS NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

The monthly meeting of the Woodlands branch of the Fanners’ Union was held on Thursday evening, Mr A. McNaught presiding. Mr Middlemiss, delegate to the Provincial Executive, gave a detailed report of the last meeting. After the formal business had been completed the president introduced the Rev. Mr Renwick, who was to give an address on the monetary system. Mr Renwich stated that he was interested in the affairs of the union, for while in Canada he was a member of the Canadian Wheat-Growers’ Association which looked after th interests of the fanners in Canada. At the close of a very interesting address the le-turer was complimented on the manner in which he handled his subject. Mr Caird referred to the fact that in 1922, when the attempt was made to return to the gold standard with such disastrous results, the Woodlands branch sent in remit after remit to encourage the union to take the matter up, but the members of the higher bodies were deaf or dense to the protestations of the branch concerning this most important question.

The local bowling club at a meeting on Wednesday evening, presided over by Mr D. McQueen, decided to open the green on October 5. The green is in good order, and given suitable weather, a successful season can be expected. On Monday, September 19, a social was held in the Dacre Hall in honour of Mr and Mrs Donald McLean who were married recently. During the evening a small presentation was made to the guests by Mr J. Kerr. Mr McLean suitably replied. Mr T. Macfariane gave a humorous recitation and had to reply with an encore. Music for the dancing was supplied by Leonard’s orchestra, while Miss Tobin (piano) and Mr W. Hewitson (pipes) played extras. Mr Clarence Frew acted as M.C. The Hall Society held a most successful evening on Tuesday evening. Leonard’s orchestra supplied the music, while Messrs J. Robbie and J. Middlemiss shared the duties of M.C. The Junior Boys’ Bible Class held a social on Friday evening in the church hail at which there was a good attendance. Master James Botting was in charge and a pleasant evening was spent in games. Tennis Club. Mr J. Trotter presided at the annual meeting of the Tennis Club which was held on Friday evening. The annual report stated:—The 193132 season was entirely satisfactory as a keen interest was manifest in the game throughout the season and a decided improvement in the standard of play resulted. The club did not enter for the competition with the combined districts last year, but several interclub games were played with Edendale, Southend, Tussock Creek, Morton Mains and Morton Mains South. Before last opening day the court was thoroughly renovated and the coating of coal-fix improved the playing surface wonderfully. Since last annual meetins the club has lost through removal from the district Mrs J. Orr (nee Miss Purvis) and Mr Lindsay Murtagh, both of whom were members of the A team and on and off the court were valauble members. A pleasing feature last season was the keenness exhibited by junior members and the need for a second hard court was more in evidence than ever, and it is a recommendation to the incoming committee to keep this point in view. The club owes a debt of gratitude to Miss McKerchar for looking after the catering side and for supplying milk for the social functions. It takes this onnortunity also of expressing thanks to the Bowling Club for the use of the pavilion and fittings and to all others who assisted in social functions last year. The election of office-bearers "resulted: President, Mr R. L. Wyeth; vicepresidents, .Messrs C. Acklin and L. Harper; club captain, Mr Wyeth; secretary and treasurer, Mr M. Reid; convener of ladies’ committee, Miss C. McKerchar; selectors, Mrs Wyeth and Mr R. L. Wyeth; committee, all officebearers.
