SPURIOUS SHILLINGS

CIRCULATING IN WELLINGTON.

PROBABLY FROM CHINA.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, September 25.

Counterfeit shillings are at present in circulation in Wellington. They are believed to have come from China through Australia and are remarkably good imitations. So far as an average person is concerned they differ from the minted shillings only in their lack of a true ring. They are dated 1921 and to those used to handling coins are slightly darker and duller in appearance and also slightly lighter to expert fingers. It is believed that large quantities of these coins were brought into Australia from China and that the few in circulation here have come from the Commonwealth.
