UNEMPLOYMENT EXPENDITURE.
(United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, September 23.
The Auditor-General’s report concerning the finances of New South Wales states that the public debt during the year increased by £23,750,000, bringing the total State public debt up to £303,750,000. The receipts for the unemployment relief fund for the 12 months were over £6,000,000 compared with £4,250,000 the previous year, while interest payments amounted to £15,726,989. Eighty-three per cent, of the unemployment relief tax had been spent on food relief. The family endowment fund had failed to meet claims and expenses by £1,068,006 and at June 30 was £2,498,978 overdrawn. Income tax had decreased by £2,772,334 and at the close of the year £1,413,699 was overdue, chiefly because of the barricading of the taxation office. During the conflict with the Federal Government between 25 and 30 men were employed for five weeks at £6 10/- each to guard the office.
