BALFOUR NOTES

(From Our Correspondent).

The committee of the North Longridge school held a wind-up euchre evening on Tuesday last. The prizes for the evening were donated by Mr A. McCaldon, the winners being Miss W. Casey and Mr McCaldon. Consolation trophies were won by Mrs C. Robb and Mr J. Robb. Mr McCaldon handed back his prize for a special competition, which was won by Master Hilary Forde. Aggregate prizes were secured as follows: Mrs E. Forde 1, Mrs T. Lush 2; Mr A. McCaldon 1, Mr L. Lush 2. After supper a dance was held to music by Messrs T. Taylor and T. Lush. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Balfour Co-operative Dairy Factory Co., Ltd. was held at the factory on Wednesday, September 21, Mr J. H. McMath, chairman of directors, presided over an attendance of eleven shareholders. The balance sheet showed that the season’s output was 46 tons 17 cwt. 15 lb. of which 7 J cwt. was sold locally and the balance sold f.o.b. to Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. The average price paid for but-ter-fat during the season was IOJd. A total of 1,123,890 lb of milk was received, and the average test was 3.455. The amount of cheese per lb of butterfat was 2.7 lb. The following directors were elected: Messrs G. R. Herron, M. J. Hickey, D. McDonald, J, H. McMath, James Conaghan. James Cowie, D. R. McTaggart, H. Osborne and W. Tregonning. Messrs McTaggart, Osborne and Tregonning will be the retiring directors next year. Mr W. D. Shelton was re-elected auditor. At a meeting of directors held immediately after the shareholders’ meeting Mr J. H. MsMath was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Lambs are now making their appearance in the district and the present mild weather is greatly in their favour, although feed is rather scarce, due to the recent frosts which have retarded growth. Dairy farmers are preparing for the milking season, which will begin in earnest next month.
