WAIRIO NOTES

(From Our Correspondent).

There was a large attendance at the euchre tournament in Gardner’s hall on Saturday evening in aid of the funds of the Athletic Society. The winners were: Ladies, Mrs Genge 1, Miss Gwen Collie 2; men, Mr T. Richardson 1, Mr A. Sherman 2.

Saturday was a gala day in the township on the occasion of a meet of the Birchwood hounds. Considerable enthusiasm was manifested, and there was a large attendance. The Wairio Jockey Club and Mr Welsh placed their properties at the disposal of the hunt, and these proved ideal for the occasion. The secretary (Mr J. O’Brien) and the committee, Messrs G. Gardner, W. Nisbet, N. Bates, jun, M. J. Egan and J. J. Finn, who were in charge of the arrangements, left no stone unturned in order to make the outing a success.

At the conclusion Mr H. D. Irving, on behalf of the Hunt executive, thanked the local residents and property-own-ers for the excellent meet that had been held, and particularly referred to the fact that the winner of the jumping competitions had been ridden by a local resident, F. Millar. The. judging of the competitions was in the hands of Messrs M. O’Brien and J. Walsh. The “hat” proved a record one for the club this season.

The following took part in the rim: Master (Mr J. Langford) on Silvern; huntsman (Mr M. O’Brien) on Silvery, whip (Mr J. O’Brien) on Lady Chicken, Messrs N. McGregor on Suva, J. McLaren on Full Order, W. Sheedy on Trooper North, F. Langford on Rombeau, T. A. Langford on Peter Pan, A. J. Langford on Bandy Boa, J. Stewart on Dunmure, J. Halford on Benjamin, C. Nisbet on Pinkie, F. Miller on Goldy Locks, A. Excell on Nippy, A. McNie on Linton, W. Nisbet on Bopox, J. Tennant on Copper Trail, H. D. Irving on Darky, G. Glent on Wait-a-minute, C. Rollo on Suggestion, J. J. Finn on Transfer, A. Sherman on First Move and M. J. Egan on Hard Tack. The jumping competitions resulted as follows: — Maiden:—Mr T. A. Langfords Goldy Locks (F. Miller) 1, T. A. Langford’s Peter Pan (owner) 2. Open.—J. .Langford’s Silvern (owner) 1, M. O’Brien’s Lady Chicken (owner) 2, M. O’Brien’s Silvery (owner) 3. Other competitions were won by Messrs D. W. Campbell and C. Nisbet.
