FORTUNE TELLING
INDIAN FINED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 14. An Indian, Swami Godalphas, aged 50, who claims to be a Brahmin priest, was fined £3 and costs in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on each of two charges of undertaking to tell fortunes. Godalphas and his companion, Makam Singh, New Zealand in January on a six months permit. They had been at Wellington most of the time since then, having been at Christchurch a month. It was stated that Godalphas was an authority on theosophy and apparently had mental telepathy powers developed to a very high degree. Two of his clients were young constables to whom he demonstrated his powers of mind reading and then proceeded to foretell something of their future.
In Court to-day defendant introduced many testimonials. In commenting on these, Mr Mosley, S.M., said “Anyone looking over these testimonials cannot fail to be struck by the lack of knowledge of their composers. They are prominent men. One is a Provincial Governor and one a prominent New Zealander, but men in high positions should be more careful in this respect.” The Magistrate added that the whole question was whether defendant had professed to tell fortunes, and he was satisfied defendant had.
