EARLY RETURNS

NEWFOUNDLAND POLL SIR RICHARD SQUIRES DEFEATED GAINS BY OPPOSITION (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) •St. John’s (Newfoundland), June 13. As a result of the general election tha Opposition early to-day was leading in four constituencies and had elected a candidate in the fifth, while the Government was leading in only one constituency. . The defeat of the Prune Minister, Sir Richard Squires, by Mr Harold Mitchell, by a majority of 600 m Trinity South, was conceded at noon when there were only a few polls not reported. ' In all the constituencies not actually decided the Opposition had a leading position and in most cases an overwhelming majority. The Opposition leader, Mr F. C. Allerdice, was also well ahead in St. John’s West. The final returns from six of the 26 constituencies voting showed five Opposition and one Government victory. Nine returns reported steadily increasing gains for the Opposition. Dr H. M. Mosdell, an Independent and a former member of the Squires Government, had been elected by acclamation. The only Government candidate elected is the Hon. F. G. Bradley (Humber) who is a Minister without portfolio. STATE OF THE PARTIES GOVERNMENT’S SINGLE SEAT. (Rec. 7.0 p.m.) St. John’s June 13.
