WAIKAKA NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening a fairly large number of people gathered in the hall on the occasion of a gift evening being tendered to Mr and Mrs D. Lawlor. Games and items were the order of the evening. At a suitable time Miss F. Turnbull asked Mr and Mrs Lawlor to accept the numerous gifts. Several others- also spoke in high terms of Mr and Mrs Lawlor. The guests of the evening were accorded musical honours after which Mr Lawlor suitably replied. At the same time the friends of Miss Agnes Lawlor presented her with a gold wrist watch. In making the presentation, Mr T. Hickey spoke of Miss Lawlor’s sterling qualities and after several others had spoken she was accorded musical honours. Mr J. Lawlor suitably replied. During the evening the following items were given: Song, Miss O. Rankin; recitation, Mrs McLeod; song, Mr G. Kelly; violin solo, Mr S. Morrison; song, Miss C. Corcoran; recitation, Miss M. McEwan; instrumental item, Miss E. McQueen and B. Ayson and Messrs Nicholson and Bennie; song, Mr E. Cummings; flute solo, Mr S. Paterson. On Saturday there was a fair attendance, despite wintry weather conditions, at the recreation grounds when the Tapanui juniors journeyed to Waikaka to play the local juniors. Play was very ragged and very little good football was shown. Waikaka won by 11 points to nil. Scores were obtained by Murray, A. Donald and Aitken, Turnbull converting one. Mr F. Corcoran had charge of the game.
