YACHTING

BALOKOVIC CUP. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 18. The yacht Victory, owned and sailed by Mr H. J. George, won the first race for the Balokovic Cup, returning to port at 9.17 this morning after completing the course of 180 miles. The only other finisher of the five starters was the Waione, sailed by Mr R. J. Thompson. The course was the longest set for any ocean race in New Zealand. It was from Auckland to Sail Rock off Whangarei, thence to Cuvier Island and back. The yachts started at eight o’clock on Friday night and met with a gale off Whangarei and three of the five retired with split mainsails. The fifth boat, the Waione, of which no word had been heard since Saturday, reached Leigh, near Kawau. to-night. She will come to Auckland to-morrow. All are well aboard.
