The Tamatea sailed with mails, passengers and cargo for Stewart Island at 10.25 a.m. on Saturday. She returned the same evening shortly after five o'clock. The ketch Lily left for Stewart Island on Saturday at 1.45 p.m. The departure of three vessels on Saturday left the wharf bare of outside shipping for the week-end. The only expected arrival to-day is that of the Union Company’s steamer Wainui from Melbourne. After discharging she sails this evening for Dunedin. The Union Company’s intercolonial freighter Waikouaiti, which arrived from Oamaru on Friday night, discharged coal

and a small quantity of general cargo on Saturday. She afterwards loaded frozen fish, hemp and general cargo, and left in the evening for Sydney. The casualty returns of the Liverpool Underwriters’ Association for May show that one motor vessel ,of 1169 tons and six steamers of 13,931 tons were totally lost, as against 10 vessels of 25,854 tons in May last year, and 12 vessels of 36,950 tons in May, 1929. The partial losses numbered 405, as against 477 in May last year, 518 in May, 1929, and 528 in May, 1928. A wireless message received by the New Zealand Shipping Company from the Rangitata, which left Wellington last Saturday morning for Southampton and London, states that the weather conditions have been unfavourable since leaving port. The message also states that all on board are well. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the A. and A. Line s chartered steamer City of Christiania left Auckland on Tuesday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australia to discharge the remainder of her general cargo from New York and sulphur from Galveston. She is due at Dunedin on August 25. The Polish Government has decided to establish a free zone at Gdynia, the port which has been constructed since the country under the Peace Treatrics obtained access to the sea. A new dock has just been commenced which will measure 1890 metres in length and will have a normal depth of from 8 to 10 metres. The official inauguration of the first portion of the construction of the port took place in April, and the Port Authorities have taken possession of it. The total value of the works at present completed is estimated at 40,000,000 zioty. Personal Items. Mr R. Ainsworth has been appointed second officer of the Kaponga. Captain C. A. Robinson, late of the Port Napier, is now in command of the Port Auckland. Captain H. 8. Whyborn has. resumed command of the Komata after his illness, relieving Captain Elders. Mr G. H. Kime has rejoined the R.M.S. Niagara as second officer, relieving Mr R. N. Turner, who is awaiting instructions at Sydney. Mr A. H. Dunnings has relieved Mr L. R. Leeder, third officer of the Waihemo, for holidays. TONGARIRO FOR BLUFF. Messrs J. G. Ward and Company, local agents for the Federal Line, advise that the steamer Tongariro from Oamaru and Port Chalmers, is due to arrive at Bluff on October 1 and will load for London and West Coast ports of the United Kingdom. The vessel sails on October 4 for Timaru. MAFIIA FOR BLUFF. Messrs Dalgety and Company advise that the Shaw, Saviil liner Mahia will load for London and Continental ports at Bluff on September 21. After loading frozen meat the vessel sails for New Plymouth on September 23. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
