RELIEVING DISTRESS

GORE BOY SCOUTS ASSIST A GENEROUS RESPONSE. With the object of assisting the Gore Relief Committee in carrying on its good work of distributing food and clothing to families in distressed circumstances the Gore Troop of the Boy Scouts on Saturday made a house—to—house canvass of South, West and East Gore. The canvass, which commenced at 8 a.m., was excellently organized and by 11 a.m. consignments of goods began to arrive at the central depot from the temporary depots which had been established in each of the areas. The scouts carried out their work thoroughly and their appeal met with a wonderful response, citizens contributing generous supplies of groceries, produce and clothing which will be of material assistance in enabling the committee to carry on its work. As the various consignments came to hand they were expeditiously handled by members of the Relief Committee, who had a busy time sorting out the various articles into readily accessible piles. Contributions to the appeal were of a varied nature and included large quantities of jam, vegetables, butter, eggs, bread, scones and other foodstuffs, while a case of hares and also one of rabbits were among the goods donated. One practical joker forwarded a large packet of Epsom salts, but apparently realizing that this did not constitute very substantial fare, he added something of a much more practical nature. The members of the committee were more than pleased with the result of the canvass, especially as many of the foodstuffs were not of a perishable nature and could be stored for future use. The committee desires to express its thanks to Messrs J. C. Ray and A. Corbett for collecting the goods from the temporary depots and also to W. T. Matheson and Co., Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Mac Gibbon and Co., Ltd., and Messrs E. Columb and M. Hay, for the use of their premises as receiving depots. On Tuesday the Boy Scouts will make a canvass of North Gore, when it is expected that the appeal will meet with an equally generous response as that made on Saturday.
