GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS
INCREASE IN LEVY EXPECTED
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, June 25.
The • Government’s legislation providing additonal finance to enable unemployment schemes to be carried on is'expected to make its appearance in the House at tomorrow’s sitting.
There is much speculation as to the form the proposals will take, but it is generallyassumed that the most effective means of augmenting the funds will be by increasing the levy. There are other alternatives offering objections which make them inconvenient or difficult of administration. There is reason to expect that the proposals will be of a temporary nature to meet the present emergency, and that the levy will be increased for the next two quarters. This would leave the question of raising further unemployment moneys open for consideration by the new Parliament after the general election.
