OTAUTAU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Mrs Summers took place on Saturday, when a large number attended to pay their last respects. The services at the house and graveside were carried out by the Rev. N. Challenger. At the evening service in the Methodist Church on Sunday, Mr Challenger delivered an address on “The Risen Life,” and made feel ing reference to the passing of Mrs Summers. Owing to being in the district for only a year he had not had the privilege of a long acquaintance with her, for during that period she had been in failing health, and had been unable to be present at church, but he had come to know her best in the home. The church would greatly miss her membership. Appropriate hymns were sung, amongst them being "For All the Saints.”

Mr Frank Malcolm, junr. (president), presided over a good attendance of members of the Bayswater Tennis Club at Bayswater on Monday evening. A, general discussion ensued as to what should be done with the surplus which was over from the dance, and it was resolved that the amount (£9) be handed over to the Plunket Society The question of the erection of a fence round the courts was also brought up, and a sub-committee, comprising Messrs F. Malcolm, L. Collie, G. D. Low, W. Malcolm and A. Johnstone, was appointed to go into the matter of cost, etc., and submit same to a future meeting. On Tuesday afternoon 50 members and friends of the Otautau branch of the Women’s Division assembled to listen to an address on “Dress Form’-’ by Miss McMillan, of the Home Science Department, Dunedin. This was much appreciated, and at the conclusion Mrs Evans, who presided, moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer, which was carried with, acclamation. Mrs Porteous also thanked Miss McMillan on behalf of the ladies of the town for her enjoyable lecture. The following tenders were let at Friday’s meeting of the Wallace County Council: Maintenance gravelling, main highway, Argyle-Tuatapere (Otautau to Bates’ section) and main highways Otautau-Nightcaps (Otautau factory to racecourse corner section) : Huggins Bros., No. 1 2/9, No. 2 3/6, No. 3 3/6; total, £lOO 10/-. Maintenance gravelling, Taylor’s-Heddon Bush road and Hundred Line east of river: Mr E. F. Kelly, No. 1 3/-, No. 2 3/4; total, £34 9/4. The following were present at a special meeting of the Dental Clinic Committee on Monday evening: Messrs G. Sinclair (chairman), J. Thomson, W. B. Rowan, E. Jellyman, D. C. McCrostie and A. Fisher (secretary). A circular letter from the Director of Dental Hygiene was read, stating that the department proposed to charge £3O per annum for each nurse to cover the cost of drugs, material, etc. He also advised that a clinic was, authorized to charge 5/- per annum for each child treated to cover costs. A balance-sheet was submitted showing that the clinic was in debt at the present time to the extent of £5 5/7. It was resolved after discussion that a charge of 5/- be made for each child treated at the clinic this year. It was also decided to forward a letter to all schools in the district setting out the financial position, together with a copy of the letter from the Director of Dental IJy. giene, and appealing for support. The chairman said the clinic was doing good work, which would ultimately be reflected in the good health of the children. The nurse had informed him that the value of the work done by her last year had been £4OO, and if each school joined up there was no reason why she should not be permanently employed, The chairman was delegated to interview the nurse and ascertain the number of children treated, and the offer of Mr A. I. Milne, the headmaster, to collect the fees from pupils attending the local

echool was accepted with thanks. There was only a moderate attendance at the euchre social on Monday evening. The winners were Mrs E.
