SEVERE FROSTS. (From Our Correspondent.) Some exceptionally severe frosts were experienced during last week which have been followed by a heavy rainfall and some cold winds. The soil is now in a very cold, sodden state and ploughing operations have been suspended for the time being. A meeting of euchre enthusiasts was re cently held in the local hall when a club with. Mr Valentine as chairman and Messrs Mcßride and A. Millar as secretary and treasurer respectively, was formed. It was decided to hold a series of tournaments during the next three months. The first of these took place last Thursday evening, when, despite the cold Weather, about 40 players took part. Twelve games were played Mrs E. Knox annexing the ladies’ prize and Mr G. Hoffman being successful in the men. The consolation prizes went to Mrs Dennison and Mr G. Herron.
The monthly meeting of the local branch of the W’omen’s Institute was held last Thursday afternoon, Mrs Nixon presiding over an attendance of 30 members. Miss Cameron and Mrs Nixon, branch delegates to the Federation Conference recently held at Dunedin, reported fully on the business transacted and were accorded a vote of thanks for their report.
Prizes donated by Mrs France and Mrs Haggart for the best dish of home grown apples and the best article made from a email salt bag, were won by Miss M. Herron and Mrs G. Scott respectively.
The gathering then adjourned to Mr L. Millar’s garden where Mr C. Burrows (Gore) gave an instructive demonstration on the pruning of fruit and rose trees. He was subsequently accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation on the motion of Miss E. Irvine. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs H. Potter and the Misses Murray and Murdoch.
