RAILWAY FREIGHTS
RECENT TARIFF INCREASE. BLOW TO RENNET INDUSTRY. (Per United Press Association). Eltham, December 18. The recent increase in the tariff on certain classes of railway freight comes as a bombshell to the New Zealand Rennet Company. Three years ago the company made an arrangement with the Department for the carriage of rennet at a certain figure but, on the 15th inst, the day after the new tariff came into force, the company learned that the freight had been materially increased. The freight from Eltham to Hamilton (325 miles), which was 65/8 per ton, is now 95/8. As a large proportion of the company’s output was sold freight forward and contracts made before the commencement of the season, the company is unable to pass on the charge and will have to bear the loss.
The company’s manager stated to-day that the increased freight charges were a severe blow to the industry. The only option was to arrange for the bulk of the output to be consigned by road transport. He pointed out that it cost more to rail a keg of rennet than a keg of beer. The Railway Department states the freight on rennet is still below the rate on general goods, pointing out that the freight from Eltham to New' Plymouth has increased from 20/6 per ton to 30/1, whereas the ordinary rate on goods over the same distance is 36/8.
