RAILWAY FINANCES

AFFECT ON THE BUDGET. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 17. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy in a postsessional address expressed apprehension lest the railway finances might seriously interfere with the Government’s attempt to balance the budget. He said the position had been developing ever since the railways were started and it had become so serious that unless taken in hand it would smash the finances of the country in the next few years. The Government was striving to balance the budget, but he was afraid the railways’ position might make it impossible. If they failed it would not be for the want of striving. The Minister added: "It is unenviable to be a Minister of the Crown in these difficult days. All the time we have to make unpopular decisions. Wc are not out for popularity but to do our job and we arc willing to take the risk of being turned out at the next election.”
