CRITICISM LEVELLED
SALARIES OF PUBLIC SERVANTS.
COMMENT BY BUSINESS MAN.
(Per United Press Association.)
Dunedin, December 10
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Stock Exchange, Mr E. R. Smith, the chairman, said that no sufficient attempt had yet been made to reduce the cost of the Public Service, which was notoriously top-heavy. Why should this section of the community continue to draw their usual salaries while the people who provided them were practically all experiencing severe reverses? “Those who pay the taxes cannot longer sustain these outgoings nor continue to provide attractive rates of pay on works for unemployed,” he said. “As long as 14/- per day is available an unemployed single man will not. exercise much initiative in seeking other avenue of work.”
