Mr I’. Beal left last week on a business visit to Melbourne.

Mr J. C. Thomson was a passenger for Dunedin by the express yesterday. Mr A. G. Davidson, of Christchurch, who is visiting Invercargill, is a guest at the Grand Hotel.

Mr J. H. Grace, registrar of the Native Land Court, arrived in Invercargill by the express from the north yesterday.

Mr G. Finn, a member of the Unemployed Board, arrived in Invercargill by the express from the north yesterday.

Mr J. Burtenshaw, of Wellington, arrived in Invercargill by motor car yesterday, and is a guest at Hotel Deschelcr. Miss V. G. Barclay, who has been teach ing under the Otago I-Alucation Board, has been appointed assistant at the Mossburn School.

Miss Christina Jaffray, at present assist ant in the Tokonui School, has been ap pointed to a similar position in the Wend onside School.

Mr W. A. Service, senior inspector for the Southland Education Board, was a passenger for Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon.

The many friends of Mr D. McDougall, M.P., will regret to hear that he left Gore yesterday to enter a private hospital at Dunedin for treatment. Mr McDougall's illness is not of a serious nature, but he requires medical treatment and rest for a period.

Mr J. Reid, who has been stationmaster at Invercargill during the past two years, was met by members of the railway staff prior to his departure for Dunedin, where he takes up the duties of goods agent., and presented with a case of pipes, a tobacco pouch and a gold-mounted pen and pencil set, as tokens of esteem. Mr W. H. Jarman, acting-stationmaster, who made the presentation, expressed the regret of the railway staff at the departure of Mr Reid and wished him success in his new position. Mr J. Pickard, district traffic manager, and Mr P. 11. Morey, district engineer, also spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Reid’s good qualities, and other members of the staff expressed regret at his departure.
