NOT IN UNIFORM

INCIDENT AT V.A.D. PARADE.

An amusing incident took place at the gathering of the Bute Volunteers Aid Detachment, at Rothesay, Scotland, recently, when the Marchioness of Bute “rebuked'’ her daughter, Lady Mary Crichton-Stuart, for appearing in “mufti.” The marchioness, who is president of the Bute branch of the British Red Cross Society, takes a keen interest in the Volunteer Aid Detachment movement. She entertained the local detachments for the presentation of home nursing certificates gained during the year. As the marchioness was presenting the prizes she glanced towards Lady Mary and remarked: "I see there is one member in charge of the second detachment who is not in uniform. Will she please come forward ?.”

Lady Mary, who is 24, and was dressed in a red costume with hat to match, blushed and obeyed.

The ranks of the Volunteer Aid Detachment members were amused. The marchioness asked her daughter if there was any reason for her not appearing in uniform. Lady Mary replied that she had searched London for a Volunteer Aid Detachment uniform, but had been unable to get one before leaving. “I will not put you in the guard room this time,” replied the marchioness, laughing, ” and Lady Mary returned to her position.
