MATAURA BOROUGH
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.

' The monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council was held last night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Councillors W. P. Thorn, J. W. Aitken, 0. E. Rowe, G. Beaumont, J. Ingram, J. H. Clark, J. G. Sutherland, W. Piercy, and John Heslin. The Mayor of Balclutha, Mr S. V. White, forwarded an invitation to the Mayor of Mataura to attend the Diamond Jubilee banquet to be held at Balclutha on Saturday—Councillor Thorn was appointed to represent the council. The Transport, Department, Wellington, forwarded a draft of’ the new regulations relating to motor drivers.—Approved.. Mr J. Spooner, secretary of the Mataura Cricket Club, wrote requesting the council to roll the recreation grounds, and also applied for permission to construct a half concrete wicket alongside the -trees.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee.
Mr Eric Duncan, secretary of the Mataura Town Band, made application for the annual subsidy. He also applied for freo lighting for the bandroom, stating. that the band’s finances were low and revenue very limited.—The usual subsidy of £2O was granted. No action was taken in regard to lighting. Mr Alfred J. Grant, secretary of the Mataura Athletic Society, applied for a donation to the society’s funds, stating that owing to weather conditions the society lost £6l over its last sports- meeting—A donation of £2 2/- was granted. Mr G. Butel, proprietor of the Palace Pictures, applied to have the electric current in the Horticultural Hall changed from 60 cycles single phase to 50 cycles to suit the installation of a talkie plant. He asked the council to move in the matter as soon as possible as he expected to have the plant ready inside a fortnight.—Referred to the Lighting Committee for a report. The- Mat aura Tennis Club made applica\ tion for a general purpose point installation at the club’s pavilion.—Held over. Mr E. J. Murphy wrote drawing the council’s attention to the state of the road leading lb his property on Boundary road. —Referred..to the Works Committee for a report.
The Water and Drainage Committee reported: (1) Regarding water supply to freezing works, ■recommend that this committee confer with the works manager as to the charges to be made for the supply; (2) recommend that one application for a water closet installation loan of £25 be granted; (3) recommend that tenders be called for the lease of that part of the sanitary, farm at present occupied by the sanitary contractor for the period from January 1, 1931, to October 1, 1931. The Works Committee recommended that the fences surrounding the domain grounds be repaired.
The reports were adopted. The foreman of works reported on work done as follows: Carting soil to recreation grounds for top-dressing; patching Denbigh street; cleaning and packing valves and painting fire plugs; lifting and relaying drain at corner of Kana and Back streets; chipping gorse and broom and cleaning ditch, Dacre street; blowing off valves on water line between intake and reservoir; cleaning footpath, Kana street; cleaning channels in Burns and Albion streets; repairing sewer and fence at paper mill; putting in water connection at Wheeler’s, Main street; repairing fence between borough and tennis courts; putting sewer connections at the council chambers, bowling green, W. P. Thorn’s residence, Bangor street, Salvation Army Hall, W. Terry’s, Bristol street, Shrimpton’s, Bristol street, J. Barclay’s, Wyndham road, and J. Piercey’s, Seibourne street. It was resolved to call a public meeting in connection with the appeal for funds for cancer research, and the council donated £5 5/- to the fund.
