FATAL FIRE
RESIDENCE DESTROYED
CRIPPLE SUFFOCATED TO , . DEATH ■ RESCUE ATTEMPTED IN VAIN (Per United Press Association.) Palmerston North, October 19. Early this morning fire practically destroved a six-roomed residence in Ruahine street owned and occupied by Mr William Mitchell, aged 87 years, who was suffocated to death. In 'the house with the deceased were two daughters and a nurse. One daughter who was sleeping in a back room, was awakened by crackling. She got out of bed and awakened her sister, nurse and father and all were able to get out of the house. The deceased, who was a cripple, returned to the bedroom evidently to get papers from his safe and, overcome by smoke, he collapsed. The fire had a strong hold by. the time the alarm was given but the brigade'-.was quickly on the scene. A rescue party was sent in to find Mitchell who was not in the room where the safe was and until the fire was subdued, could not enter the room in which the unfortunate man was subsequently. found.
