GORE W.C.T.U.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Gore W.C.T.U. was held on Tuesday, the president, Mrs F. M. Beattie, presiding over an excellent attendance of members. Arrangements were made for the “bring-and-buy” sale to be held at the next meeting on October 28. It was disclosed that Gore had won the banner presented for the greatest increase in the cradle roll during the year. Mrs E. C. Smith read to the meeting an extremely interesting paper entitled “Trifles.” The theme of the speaker’s address was the fact that the trifles of life frequently became large issues. Many a child had a great future in front of him, though this might not be apparent at the time; as an instance President Hoover was quite obscure in his youth. Frequently what seemed only small wastes became quite large when taken together. Mrs Smith went on to speak of the liquor traffic, remarking that fid a day spent on liquor came to £9 a year and illustrated the amount of insurance that this sum would bring in. The Boston Welfare Society had had only one per cent, of applications for help from persons destitute through liquor since the passing of prohibition compared with 20 per cent, as formerly.
Mrs Smith was accorded a most attentive hearing and at the conclusion of her address a vote of thanks.
