WINTON CLUB’S MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting ofthe Winton Tennis Club was held on Wednesday evening, when the president, Mr F. Tilley presided over a good attendance. The chairman stated that the club had experienced a fairly successful year. After a good deal of discussion it was decided to laj’ down a new court early last season. This, with other work, entailed a heavy expenditure, and the thanks of the club were due, to those members who came forward and loaned the sum of £5 each to enable the work to be completed. A very successful tournament was held on Labour Day, when a large number of entries were received, and judging from the interest shown in the tournament, he anticipated that it would besome an annual event. Most of the credit for the successful running of the tournament was due to Messrs Brandford and Walker. The club suffered a distinct loss by removal to Waimate of the lady champion, Miss Mabel Watson, who had always taken a keen interest in the club’s affairs. The club entered three teams in the various competitions. A Saturday A in the Invercargill competition who put up a good performance winning the Baird Cup. The Wendesday team had a victory in winning the cup without the loss of a match, and they are to be congratulated on their success. The Saturday B team in the Central competition also had some very close and interesting matches. The club competitions were won by two old veterans, who have had their names on the honours board many times—Miss M. Watson and Mr George Lindsay. The ladies’ B grade was won by Miss M. Martin after an interesting competition. Mr B. Rutledge won the men’s B grade. To the ladies of the club special thanks were due for the provision of afternoon tea during the season and on match days. To Mr T. Walker, for the courtesy extended the club in the use of his office for committee meetings; to the honorary secretary (Mr T. N. Eastlake), who rendered efficient service during the year; to the office-bearers, committee and all who assisted to make the season so successful. ■‘lt will be necessary to limit our expenditure as far as possible to enable the incoming committee to repay a portion of the loans out of this year’s revenue,” said the chairman in conclusion, (‘but with the added facilities I see no reason why the incoming season should not be a very successful one.” (Applause.) The balance-sheet showed that the club was in debt to the extent of £95 6/2, and of that amount £B5 was the amount loaned to lay down the new court. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the president stated that the large attendance present showed that the members were enthusiastic, and this promised a successful season. The courts were in excellent order and the maintenance would be very light. Several inquiries had already been received from members of country clubs with regard to the Labour Day tournament and evidently the country players were very interested. The motion was seconded by Mr T. Walker and carried.

The presentation of the trophies won last season was then proceeded with by the. president. Mr C. Mason replied on behalf of the ladies and Mr G. Lindsay on behalf of the gentlemen. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle; president, Mr I*'. Tilley; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Walker and O. A. B. Smith; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. N. Eastlake; general committee, president, vice-presidents, secretary, Mesdames R. Martin and W. Brandford, Misses K. Hamilton and B. Humphries, Messrs G. Lindsay, L. Perrelle, A. Watson and B. Rutledge; grounds committee, Messrs G. Lindsay B.' Rutledge and L. Perrelle; selection committee, Mrs Martin, Messrs G. Lindsay and W. Brandford; social committee, ladies of general committee; delegates to Southland Association, Messrs Lindsay, Tilley. Brandford; delegates to Central Association, Messrs Tilley and Rutledge; ladder committee, members of the selection committee; hon. auditor, Mr J. A. Broom. It was decided to enter the same teams in the competitions as last season, namely, Saturday A and Wednesday teams in the Invercargill competition and a Saturday team in the Central competition. It was also decided that the committee make immediate arrangements for the Labour Day tournament.

Wednesday, October 1, was fixed as the opening day. A lengthy discussion took place with regards to a club ladder, and it was agreed to have a ladder, members expressing their opinions of it being the only way as to determine the merits of the players. It was resolved that on match days two courts only be allotted to the competition games.

The lack of social functions in connection with the club was mentioned by- Mr T. Walker, and he suggested that the social side of the chib be revived this season.
