Lieutenant Dave Smith, who recently attempted a flight to England, was killed at Mascot aerodrome this afternoon. His aeroplane was seen in trouble at a height of 300 ft. Smith leapt out and his mangled body was recovered 50 yards from the spot where the machine crashed in pieces. A later report states that Lieutenant Smith, who was quite a young man, was trying out a speedy Tiger Moth for Saturday's air pageant when it is believed that the engine seized, hurling him out at a height of 300 ft. His body struck and smashed a 4in. beam on an old shed, then crashed to the ground. The machine was buried for nearly sft. in a local nursery adjoining the aerodrome. Lieutenant Smith and Mr W. Shiers attempted a flight to England last March. They were forced down in a rice field near Banglok on April 25 and the flight was abandoned.
