RETURNED SOLDIERS

MEETING OE GORE ASSOCIATION. The fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening. Mr F. L. McFarlane (president) occupied the chair, and the following members were present: Messrs C. M. Wilson, R. Jones, E. Columb, L. Roberts, T. Rusbridge, F. M. Murray, J. Adams, A. C. Steel,- F. Foulston, W. D. Shelton, J. McDonald and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Messrs L. McKelvie and C. Henry, of the Mataura executive, also attended. The hospital visiting sub-committee reported on its visit to the Gore Hospital during the past fortnight. Two ex-soldiers were undergoing treatment on the first Sunday, and three on the second Sunday. All were making good progress towards recovery. The committee was thanked for its report, and Messrs Columb and Roberts were appointed a visiting comtnittee for the next term. Qne new member was elected to the association. The secretary reported that the financial membership was now 277, as against 260 last meeting night and 251 at the corresponding period last year. Mr McKelvie, Mataura, reported on the unemployment situation at Mataura. It was decided to allocate a further £lO from the canteen funds grant for relief work at that centre. Reports from Invercargill stated that the unemployment situation was still bad at. that centre. —It was decider! to make a further and final payment of £5O from the canteen funds grant for the provision of relief work at Invercargill. As the money allocated.to Gore towards unemployment relief was nearly all spent, it was decided to reduce the days of work on the Gore borough work to five days a week for married men and three days a week for single men. Mr J. M. White, secretary of the Dunedin R.S.A., wrote applying for the transfer of J. H. Stevenson, Balclutha, from the Gore Association to the Dunedin Association.—Granted. The general secretary, Wellington, wrote stating that a re-issue of a badge to J. J. Wylie had been granted by the Dominion executive. Mr Columb reported that a satisfactory response was being received in the collection from South African veterans towards the cost of the erection of a stone in the Gore cemetery’ in memory of the late John Gouk (ex-imperial and South African veteran).—The secretary’ was instructed to write to the Town Clerk, Gore, asking for permission to use one of the soldiers’ plots for the purpose. Mr J. Harper, R.S.A. representative on the War Pensions Board, wrote giving particulars of the injuries received on war service by a local ex-soldier. The board had decided that any aggravation of the disability’ due to war service had passed away some considerable time ago.—Left in the secretary’s hands. Mr Fyfe was asked to discuss the organization of a “stunt” for the annual reunion on Armistice night. Mr Fyfe already had something drawn out which it was thought might be worked up. It was left in the hands of a small sub-committee to report to next meeting.
