CROQUET

THE GORE CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Gore Croquet Club was held last evening, the president, Mrs J. A. Blaikie, presiding over an attendance of 25 members. In presenting the annual report and bal-ance-sheet (published yesterday) the president remarked that it had been a very successful season both from a playing and a financial point of view. She praised the good work of the committee and excellent spirit among members. The grounds were in good order and had been top-dressed during the season. The finances were better than formerly. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. S. Fleming; president, Mrs A. T. Pettigrew; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. A. Blaikie and F. S. Graham; committee, Mesdames W. McAra, J. Brown, J. Hodge, I. I. McGregor, G. McLeod, G. J. Hamilton, R. B. Neale; secretary, Mrs R. J. Telfer; club captain, Mrs J. A. S. Aitken; greens committee, Mesdames Wallis, Hodge and Blaikie (re-elected) ; hon. auditor, Mr W. D. Shelton (re-elected) ; selection committee, Mesdames Pettigrew and Telfer and Mr Aitken. Miss McCrostie, Mesdames G. Peterson, V. Gerken, F. Murray and J. J. Stroud were elected members.

It was decided that the subscription fee be £2 2/- per member as formerly. It was decided that there be one ladder for both ladies and gentlemen. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring president, and members of committee, secretary and also Mrs A. H. Aitken for entertaining Messrs A. Ross and B. Richards during their stay in Gore. Mr J. Aitken, who is president of the Southland Croquet Association, remarked that the Dominion croquet tourney' would be held in Wellington this year. As a result of Mr Ross’s visit to Southland it had been decided to hold a South Island tourney. They were given the opportunity of having the tourney in Gore, but this had been refused. He would like to know whether members would be willing to give up the use of the greens for a week in order that the Southland tourney might be held at Gore.

An expression of opinion showed that all were in favour of the holding of the Southland tourney at Gore. It was decided that the ladder be re-ad-justed and that the bisques be taken as a fair indication of merit', the ladder to be limited to 20 with others to challenge, bottom members.

It was also. decided that the fixing of the opening day be left to the committee, the date to be as near as possible to Labour Day. The newly-elected president, Mrs Pettigrew, asked support for a euchre evening to raise funds.
