NEW LEGISLATION ' AMENDMENTS BY HOUSE ' OF LORDS COMPROMISE ANTICIPATED (British Official Wireless.) '(Ree, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 18. The newspapers suggest that if the House of Lords’ amendments to the Coalmines Bill are resisted when the Bill returns to the House of Commons, the differences will ba 1 settled by a compromise. The most important amendments made by«the House of Lords deaf with miners’ working hours and with the compulsory amalgamations of collieries. The first provides for a spread over of the working time of miners, permitting agreements for a 45- , hour week or a 90-hour fortnight, instead of a fixed working day of 7J hours. The second amendment provides for substituting the Board of Trade for ad hoe commissioners as the authority to be responsible for promoting colliery amalgamation schemes.
